My Mission

Why We Need Global Warming Insurance

I have been watching the debate over Global Warming for more than a decade, and during that time I have been dismayed at how the debate became focused on causes, rather than consequences. It does not matter whether you believe man is causing the problem, historically the earth has always warmed up between ice ages. The evidence indicates that sea levels have been tens to hundreds of meters higher than they are today as a result of the melting of the Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets. I believe it is a natural process that we can not stop, regardless of our best efforts. What makes this time different is the speed at which this change is occurring. Recent events have shown that we can no longer afford to think in terms of glacial time periods, where it takes decades to notice any change, and centuries for the change to occur. These ice sheets have begun to show clear warning signs of their impending collapse, and I believe we have decades and not centuries before we start to feel the impact.

Unfortunately for those who will suffer the most, governments and environmental groups continue to stay focused on mitigation strategies and are dedicating few resources to adaptation strategies. We need to start planning for the worst outcome, and not the best. It is foolish, and extremely arrogant, to plan only for success when the consequences of failure are so great. Small Island Nations and Arctic Peoples are already experiencing the early signs of sea level rise, and they will be the first to feel its full impact. The vast majority of the world’s population lives on coastal plains that are at highest risk. Coastal cities are unprepared for even minor rises in sea levels, and not one of them has announced plans to protect themselves from a sea level rise within the next couple of decades.

The problem is that we are all relying upon the latest IPCC findings that sea levels will rise only a meter or two, at worst, by the end of this century. The IPCC, the greatest scientific endeavor of our time, has been fatally flawed from the outset. When governments, not scientists, make scientific policy the results are always to maintain the status quo as long as possible, despite a growing body of evidence that the underlying assumptions are based upon facts that are false and flawed.

I am reminded of past scientific truths: that the sun revolves around the earth, and that the earth is flat. Governments fought to maintain those beliefs for decades and centuries before finally caving in to incontestable facts. The IPCC has based its findings upon the most optimistic and unrealistic assumptions, and the resulting consensus reports are so weak and vague (and wrong) that they are neither reliable nor trustworthy. We know too little about the dynamics behind these ice systems and the more we learn the more it appears that change is occurring at an unprecedented rate. What used to take centuries is now happening in years, and in some cases even months. Time is not on our side and the theme for the latest International Climate Change Conference states the problem we face best, “Act On Climate Change – Now or Never”.

It may already be too late to avoid the worst effects from the rise in sea levels if the ice sheets suddenly collapse. The task is overwhelming: relocating billions of people; replacing trillions of dollars in coastal infrastructure; avoiding economic collapse when millions of businesses are swallowed by the rising waters; and recovering from the loss of ports which have become the lifeline holding the world’s economy together. I doubt we can fully succeed even if we start working on this right now.

Failure, however, is not an option that I am willing to accept; the cost in lives and misery will be too great. History is harsh to those who fail, and I fear that future generations will undoubtedly shake their heads in wonder and disgust over how we waited until it was too late, when the warning signs were so clear. Morally and ethically we must do all in our power to save as many lives as possible from the inevitable consequences of sea level rise. I hope and pray that we can save the majority of those at risk, but we can most certainly not stand by and allow millions of people to die when we can easily prevent their deaths.

My Philosphy

Any reasoned and scientific approach towards a problem requires a basic philosophy and here is mine.

It is the obligation of every person to make the world a better place to live.

It is a worthwhile and noble cause to dedicate your life to this pursuit.

Can there be a nobler cause than to save the lives of thousands to millions of people?

About This Blog

This is a pro-environmental, pro-smart development, pro-recycling, pro-clean renewable energy sources oriented website. We must never lose focus on the essential fight against Global Warming which is the only chance we have to slow down the rate of sea level rise. I will spend a considerable amount of time advocating the use of alternative renewable energy sources. My primary focus is however, and will remain, on forecasting the coming meltdown and providing up to date information about the condition of the Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets.

Most of my posts will be based on news reports. I always research the news I read and I am amazed at how often the story is incomplete or missed the point entirely. I will endeavor to thoroughly research every news story I post and I will always provide links to sites aloowing independent verification of my research and conclusions.

Each week I will post an in-depth article about a single topic. If there is a specific topic or question you have, I would be delighted to hear from you and I will carefully consider including that topic in one of these weekly articles.

As I grow more comfortable with using and managing my blog I will add additional features which will include, but not be limited to: polls, cartoons, The Hall Of Honor, Skeptics Corner, and the inevitable advertising.

Advertising is a necessary evil if I am going to be able to devote the time and attention to this cause that it deserves, but I promise to pick my ads with care and to always make sure that they represent the best, most environmentally sound, products and services available.

Thank you for visiting my blog and I look forward to your comments.
